I am taking a Continuing Education class at RISD right now (I get classes for free because of work It is just one of the perks). The class is called Materials and Techniques of Painting. It's an introductory course that focuses on various techniques of painting and acquainting the participants with a number paints, mediums, grounds, canvases, etc, etc, etc, available to them. What I am learning right now is that, as with most other disciplines, knowing the tools available to you takes time and patience but without that foundation things will be very hard.
I will post some pictures of what I am doing in class in the next couple of weeks.
Blessings to you all!
